Weight really starts to add up when additional pockets are incorporated, PALS webbing, additional padding, etc. But that has nothing to do with the base fabric and more to do with design choices and the trade-offs involved.
The D versus D designation equates to the linear mass of the core yarn used to weave and create the Condura fabric. It has nothing to do with the tightness of the weave.
As a result, neither fabric has the upper hand when it comes to water resistance. Also, from what I've heard, there is also not a significant cost difference to the manufacturers. That's why reinforced stitching in potential points of stress and failure are so critical.
Overall, I don't think the trade-off is a good one in most instances. I'm on record as liking Maxpedition's decision to use a lighter deiner fabric in their Jumbo EDC pack. But that really has more to do with my dislike of the stiffness of the heavier coated fabric than other factors. The weight difference, especially in such a small bag, is negligible. I do personally like the feel of D better though. Edit in relation to TARFU's post: The zipper seam on one of the pockets on my BFM has stretched out a bit and is giving me issues, but that pack is the one I've had the longest and is now only used to haul clothes in my truck when moving from place to place so I haven't looked into repairing it or anything. I used to stuff that bag far beyond what I should have, so it's no surprise.

Some from laying it down on a pointy rock I didn't know was pointy or from carelessly stuffing a goat head into the pack and of course their pointy little horns can poke a hole in things. On all occasions it was me having my head up you know where and never have wished for D. Just my experience with D, never touched the D stuff as I do feel its overkill I will only buy d, contrary to what you hear on this forum, it does make a difference and takes much more abuse..

Truth be told I'm not a serviceman jumping out of helicopters or having my pack run over by armored vehicles so D will cover everything I realistically hope to do with a pack.
