Microsoft's home-built or home-bought smartphone lineup may not be long for this world , but it looks like the development community isn't giving up on it. The Nokia Lumia is an entry-level Windows Phone 8 device, announced back in , and later succeeded by the Lumia and The Android ROM community isn't quite as active as it was a few years ago with Android itself becoming more feature-rich.
Still, CyanogenMod is chugging along with support for a ton of devices and a reasonably fast update cycle. A new snapshot build of the Marshmallow-based CyanogenMod 13 is now official ZNH5Y , and it will be available on the first wave of devices today.
I'm going to be real with you guys: it's been a long while since I've flashed a ROM on any of my devices. Stock Android has gotten so good for me personally that I just haven't really gotten around to experimenting with anything new. That said, I definitely appreciate that the option is there for everyone out there who isn't happy with their device's software. And if I were to flash something right now, there's about a percent chance that it'd be CyanogenMod. However, downloading the necessary files to flash it could be an exercise in frustration.
Yeah, you knew it was only a matter of time before Team Douche hooked you up, too - and now the wait is over. This article deals with a couple of advanced topics. Last week, we dropped our first CyanogenMod 7 Theme Roundup , and since then, we've gotten several great theme suggestions, as well as a bundle of requests to do another roundup - so here we are!
This edition of the roundup brings some really nice offerings from the theming community. Everything from mellow colors with tones of blue and grey, to multiple colors that really stand out, there should be something for everyone. Without further ado, let's get started! This week has definitely been the week of the Droid X - after about a year of being on the market, the magic of the "2nd init" hack allowed for the first ever unofficial build of CyanogenMod 7 on this popular U.
Only days after the momentous announcement, the Droid X CyanogenMod, led by the great cvpcs , is now part of the official CM source tree and served nightly from the CM mirror network.
As Android users, we have a certain amount of freedom with our devices - especially if you're running a rooted device with a custom ROM like CyanogenMod. One of those freedoms is the ability change the look of Android with themes. The launcher provides additional features not provided by the default Android launcher, including more customization abilities including icon themes, effects, and behavior , the ability to backup and restore configuration settings, and other features.
Steve Kondik released CyanogenMod 6, based on Android 2. CyanogenMod 7 firmware is based on Android 2. The custom portions of CyanogenMod are primarily written by Cyanogen Steve Kondik but include contributions from the xda-developers community such as an improved launcher tray, dialer, and browser and code from established open source projects such as BusyBox in the shell.
CyanogenMod 7 development began when Google released Android 2. CyanogenMod version 8 was planned to be based on Android 3. However, no source code for Honeycomb was provided by Google until it appeared in the tree history of the Android 4. CyanogenMod 9 is based on Google's Android 4. By the last days of November , some alpha versions had been distributed, in particular for the Samsung mobile phones Nexus S and Galaxy S.
On 9 August , after various betas and release candidates, CyanogenMod released the finished version of CyanogenMod 9. On 29 August , CyanogenMod released a minor update, version 9. At the beginning of each month, a soft freeze of the CyanogenMod codebase is put into effect; once the team deems a build stable enough for daily use, it is released under the milestone or "M" series.
On November 13, , final stable builds were released for several devices. CyanogenMod The CyanogenMod source code repository also contains the ClockworkMod Recovery a "recovery image", maintained by Koushik "Koush" Dutta , which may be used to install CyanogenMod and other custom upgrades. A recovery image is a special boot mode, which is used to backup or restore the device's storage and repair or upgrade system software. Early responses of tablet and smartphone manufacturers and mobile carriers were typically unsupportive of third-party firmware development such as CyanogenMod.
Manufacturers expressed concern about improper functioning of devices running unofficial software and the related support costs. As a result, technical obstacles including locked bootloaders and restricted access to root permissions were common in many devices. However, as community-developed software has grown more popular [ 40 ] [ 41 ] and following a statement by the Library of Congress in the United States that permits "jailbreaking" mobile devices, [ 42 ] manufacturers and carriers have softened their position regarding CyanogenMod and other unofficial firmware distributions, with some, including HTC , [ 43 ] Motorola , [ 44 ] Samsung [ 45 ] [ 46 ] and Sony Ericsson , [ 47 ] providing support and encouraging development.
As a result of this, in the need to circumvent hardware restrictions to install unofficial firmware lessened as an increasing number of devices shipped with unlocked or unlockable bootloaders , similar to the Nexus series of phones.
Device manufacturers HTC [ 39 ] and Motorola [ citation needed ] announced that they would support aftermarket software developers by making the bootloaders of all new devices unlockable, although this still violates a device's warranty. Phone manufacturers have also taken to releasing "developer editions" of phones that are unlocked.
Until version 4. These packages were included with the vendor distributions of Android, but not licensed for free distribution. After Google sent a cease and desist letter to CyanogenMod's chief developer, Steve Kondik, in late September demanding he stop distributing the aforementioned applications, development ceased for a few days. Following a statement from Google clarifying its position [ 57 ] and a subsequent negotiation between Google and Cyanogen, it was resolved that the CyanogenMod project would continue, in a form that did not directly bundle in the proprietary "Google Experience" components.
On 28 September , Cyanogen warned that while issues no longer remain with Google, there were still potential licensing problems regarding proprietary, closed-source device drivers. Kondik wrote he was rebuilding the source tree, and that he believed the licensing issues with drivers could be worked out. He added that he was also receiving assistance from Google employees.
